Clustering Conference, Istanbul May 25th-26th.
The role of clusters for the development
of regional and local economies is on the agenda at the Marmara Istanbul on May 25-26.
The conference addresses the critical role of "clustering" on increasing the international competitiveness of SMEs and will play a vital role on initiating the networking between existing clusters in Europe and potential clusters in Turkey, and thereby contribute to the EU's Lisbon Strategy.
The three European Commission funded SME projects, GAP-Entrepreneur Support Centres (GAP-GIDEM), EU-Turkey Business Centres (ABIGEM) and Fashion and Textile Cluster(FTC), are hosting the Istanbul Clustering Conference on 25th - 26th May 2006 in Turkey.
An impressive roll-call of economic experts and business leaders from all over the world are among speakers at the clustering06 conference in Istanbul (25-26 May 2006), which will take on the theme of "More than the sum" to explore the role of clustering as a catalyst for economic development and to encourage discussion, learning and exchange of best practice from around the globe. To further support international cooperation for developing new and existing clusters, the conference focuses on three core concepts:
More than the Sum: Cluster theory, strategy and policy
How did we do: Cluster Practices on the textile, food, and tourism sectors.
Challenges and Opportunities: Innovation, R&D, fashion and design, networking and support
Best practice and experience from across Europe
The Istanbul Clustering Conference programme will explore best practice and experience from across Europe and the Mediterranean partners in the role of clusters for the development of regional and local economies. The extensive conference programme boasts a number of highlights:
The Leggera case, and the successful Italian clustering experience will be presented by Mr. Andrea Forti, Senior Economic Advisor at Centro Studi Industria Leggera, focusing on the potential and challenges of clusters and local productive systems in the new global competition.
Ms. Mateja Dermatia, Director of The Competitiveness Institute and former State Undersecretary in the Ministry of Economy of Republic of Slovenia will present on the experience of implementing cluster policy in the process of integrating with the EU.
The conference will include presentations on the experiences of the Food Production Cluster in Central Germany and the Automotive Cluster in Upper Austria, as well as a presentation by Mr. Jean-Marie Rouillier, President of the French Industrial Districts Club on the French experience of territory attractiveness.
The UK's successful textile experience and details on the UK's EMCAT Cluster will provide detailed clues for the Turkish textile industry.
France, Portugal and Austria will share their clustering experience in tourism and the key to the successes of a wide range of tourism clusters.
The conference, which is attended by policy makers, government officials, academicians, business representative/support organisations such as chambers, sector associations, unions and SMEs from across Turkey, Europe and the MEDA region takes place at the Marmara Hotel, Istanbul, Turkey 25th-26nd May 2006.
